Foundation, Philosophy and Approach
I stumbled upon Pilates and Ortho-Bionomy® around the same time in my life. A career of perennial plant Nursery work, landscaping, farming topped off with childbirth had put me into a place of pain that I was not able to manage. I sought out some “core strengthening” work from a local PIlates studio on the suggestion of my father who is a retired neurologist. I had no idea of what PIlates was or entailed but engaged in a dedicated way and experienced a huge reduction in pain and return to my strong, high functioning self. Pilates brought a sense of self-confidence, connectedness and self-awareness that I had not felt since I was a competitive diver. The Pilates method of attention to precise movement and connectedness between mind and body ignited that diving coach in me to pursue teaching the work- empowering people to improve their quality of life through movement !
During that same time, I was receiving Ortho-Bionomy® and massage from a local massage therapist who was just learning the work. I had no true understanding of what Ortho-Bionomy® was but always left the session relaxed with reduced pain everywhere. It paired with the Pilates as a perfect self-care regime. After 10 years of receiving Ortho-Bionomy® I decided I wanted to learn the practice of Ortho-Bionomy® because of the profound and lasting effect that it has had on my body, nervous system and personal growth. There is a great overlap between Pilates and Ortho-Bionomy® in the promoted self-awareness and self-recognition of patterns that exist within ourselves that may need to shift in order for us to function optimally on a mental, physical and spiritual level. It is my honor to be able to share these two modalities with people of all ages.
I believe that diversity of one’s life experiences helps to contribute the character and depth of a person - enriching one experience with another. This has proven true in my own life from many years of dedication to athletics -specifically springboard and platform diving, to receiving my Biology degree from Reed College, working in perennial plant industry in the US and abroad, and owning an organic farm and seasonal floral design company in Paonia, CO. All of these experiences may seem separate with no connection but they have woven the tapestry that is me. The 15 years that I spent as a diver and 5 years as a coach helped to solidify an innate connection to mind-body movement and developed within me the skill to work with kids of all ages, observe the body in motion and translate what needs to occur in the student/client to refine the movement to their best ability in that moment. My experience with the natural world has cultivated a deep connection with the earth and my surroundings that I may tap into when practicing Ortho-Bionomy® providing a sense of peace and grounding throughout the session. I look forward to having the opportunity to work with you !
